I watched The Happening last night. And you know what, its not actually that bad. Sure its hokum… wooooo, the trees release a bio-chemical attack on mankind because we are a threat to the environment… But really other than a slightly dodgy premise the film itself conducts the subject matter well enough, you spend the whole time wonder what the hell is happening, and finding the possibility of the plants attacking us laughably stupid, which I suppose would be the case were that to actually happen.
But its short, simple, doesn’t throw too many twists… And has some rather spectacular suicides…
I also thought it was bloody funny, that down there on the cast list is M.Nights obligatory cameo, playing ‘Joey’ the man who has no screentime, but phones and texts the lead female as a crazy stalker. That’s just plain silly, that’s not even a cameo, at least in the previous films it was a proper cameo.
Sixth Sense. – erm. I forget, but a quick Google tells me
Unbreakable – Man going to sports event with a weapon.
Signs – Bad Neighbour
The Village – Security guard reflected in a glass door.
The lady in the water. - Well, actually this was effectively the third most important character…
The Happening – EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WHO DOESN’T APPEAR ON SCREN!!!! Bwaahahaha
OK, I have gone off at a tangent. The Happening has been slated, and I can sort of see why, it’s a slow boiler, nothing happens for much of the time, so not very exciting, the plot is never truly explained, just theorised and summed up both at the beginning and end as ‘something that can never truly be explained or understood’. So I can see how this would count against it in the great scheme of things. But really, it’ll have to go a long LONG way to be worse than Signs.
Oh yes. Signs.
TBH the film is really good. A tense, tight drama… Real edge of the seat stuff, but the spell (for me) is broken at the point where we are shown that water simply dissolves the Alien invaders… Water. An Alien species manages to build stealth spaceships and invade the planet all over simultaneously… And yet are unable to detect that most of the planets surface is covered in this deadly substance, that it even falls from the air, or even that the human body that they seem to be harvesting for food is also made up of mostly water… With all this advanced space-ship technology they have never invented the hazmat suits while they desiccate the human race.
I know its pedantic… But I just cant help it.
So, yeah, the Happening. Not as bad as some people thing (IMO), and TBH I still quite like his movies.
